MIKE SCHPITZ – WE ON FIRE

June 30th, 2010

As anyone that has been keeping up with Mike Murder, I mean Mike Schpitz, knows, the clever Kansan emcee just doesn’t seem capable of making a mistake lately (World Cup refs, take notes). This time around sounds like more of the same, which is actually some good news when it comes to his latest single, We on Fire. On the beat side the DJBooth Freestyle series alum enlists producer Rob Bates to keep the energy level up with a digitally heavy and video game inspired beat (is that Paperboy I hear?) that matches Schpitz’s constantly fluctuating pop culture reference flow. Lyrically, Mike continues to ensure fans that his creativity/insanity is as rewind-worthy as ever by dropping off-kilter Hulk Hogan jokes and schpiting aggressively intelligent lines like: “I’m relaxed to the max, kick back in a glass house; Why ya’ll throw stones? I chokehold microphones.” For even more hip-hop heat from Mr. Schpitz be sure to check out his upcoming effort Stanley Ipkiss: Year of the Nice Guy EP, dropping August 3.

“LightShow”

June 25th, 2010

“Light Show Prod. by Th Gr8tThinkaz” Blink x Young Blu x Jay Moses x The Boy illinois”

I am very impressed. Although I am a music producer, and I work with a lot of different people, I will not claim to be a fan of them all. Dave Coresh, Mike Schpitz, Add-2, etc. Those names should resound in the forefront of your mind if you know anything about my work– and big ups to my homie Rick “3tre” O’Neal as well. Those are just a few of the handful of artists I’ve worked with who have left an everlasting impression on me. Other than that, most other up & comers have the hardest time not only getting my attention, but also gaining attention & fan base out side of the Chicago area, let alone their local area-neighborhoods. Because of this, I admittingly don’t give all up & comers the time of day when they approach me about music & free beats.

When it comes to these  4 (3) guys, that’s a whole different story. I met Nelson “Blink” Agose my freshman year when he was performing songs for U of I campus events…this was back when Corn Clark aka Retro Marley aka founder of Fly Kite Media, was on stage right there with him as his hype man (those were classic memories lol smh). Ever since, I’ve been able to witness first hand, Nelson’s growth -from someone who just rapped when he had the chance, to becoming an all out, full blown, lyrically sound artist of great intelligence. Same with The Boy Illinois, who I had heard about through my boy 3Tre long before I ever had the chance to meet him. Lastly, JayMoses was someone who caught my ear in a freestyle battle earlier on this year (academic year 2009-2010).

Being able to work closely with Blink & T.B.Illinois got me back into full force producing. I had lost it for a minute. The drive…idk what you want to call it, but they got me back on my toes. And now, with the summer underway I see that their work has only gotten better. Surely I can say, it won’t be long until all of us are sitting on a yacht somewhere enjoying the success we’ve worked so hard for.

Been a hot minute…but I’m back

Pray4Love

April 4th, 2010

Champaign, IL—Some students struggle in figuring what their purpose is in college. For others, a future career in the American music and entertainment industry is seemingly inevitable.  Already halfway through his last spring semester, UIUC senior Nelson ‘Blink’ Agose – one of several recording artists inspired by the dream of greatness – acknowledges that finding a way into the American music industry will be no easy task.

“The fact that I already  have A LOT of support back at home has been a huge step for my [already existent] career in Nigeria, but I look to change the American music industry.” Nelson is just one of many students who have been torn between a college education experience and an early profession in the recording arts; several students this year have left UIUC to peruse similar opportunities. “There are many different marketing aspects when it comes to making it as a major recording artist and a lot of that has to do with the brand that artists make for themselves, the support group that the artist has to rely on, and the steps that he or she takes to achieve his or her set goals.” – Nelson Agose, 20, Univ. of Ill. Graduated Senior.

Syndik8 Records has been pressing the young artist to release his self-titled project, No Hesitation – a 6 to 7 track EP set to debut in summer 2010  – and with graduation right around the corner, timing could not be any more perfect. “There are people who have told me to stop rapping because I am just a college student, but in this music business you have to have a heart of steel… if someone says something that is not positive, I do not acknowledge it.” Though it has not been easy, Nelson ‘Blink’ Agose has maintained his relationship with Syndik8 Records, and has built up quite a reputation in the Nigerian market for original hip-hop music.

“A lot of people in this world have this mediocre mindset where they always try to make a lot of ‘back-up’ plans but I try to tell them that there is no point in having a ‘plan B’ when you never get a chance to live out your ‘plan A’. Whatever it is you want to do, believe in yourself and go for it.” – Nelson ‘Blink’ Agose

Blink’s latest leak #pray4love is a true reflection of the times:

  • In Chicago, IL over 40 African-American youth have been victims of gun violence in the past week
  • Americans are angry at the current state of the country and we are seeing an uprising in anti-government groups
  • There are daily murderous attacks in Blink’s birth country of Nigeria

Blink has not turned a blind eye to any of these problems and has been aware of the social and political issues at hand.  He felt motivated to send a message to his generation and his message comes in the form of his track#prayforlove

Blink aggressively rides the Just Blaze produced instrumental as he lyrically and profoundly addresses the social and political dilemmas that are plaguing our society right now. Blink’s concern is felt through his delivery as he directs his generation to reflect…”these times we live in are a bit different, where men raise guns but don’t know how to raise children.” Blink felt this message was fitting to record such expressive content over Jay Electronica’s ‘Exhibit A’ instrumental.

This track ties in seamlessly with the relevant issues facing our generation and we would like to service the track and artwork to your blog for posting.

Attached to this email you will find the #pray4love artwork and track. Below is the zshare download link:http://www.zshare.net/audio/746109662d6086a3/

Blink’s Bio

“It is a beautiful thing to truly know what your purpose in life is, mine is simply music.”

Blink is an emerging artist who brings a fresh and signature sound to today’s hip-hop music, with a voice for the next generation he is on par to make his mark on the music industry.

Born Nelson Agose, this 20 year old rapper is a proud native of Lagos, Nigeria. It is Nigeria, whom he credits his style and sound. Much of his music displays a heavy and assertive beat that he effortlessly flows to with his distinct voice. In 2006 Blink moved to the US to pursue his education at the University of Illinois but he never lost sight of his passion, which was to create great music.

In 2009 he released his first mixtape entitled The Work Ethic. This also happens to be his motto in life. Blink believes work ethic is going to be the key to his success. “You have to have a relentless work ethic. So I grind all day, I never stop writing, learning, listening or recording.”

SummitOnTheSummit

April 3rd, 2010

“A billion people worldwide don’t have clean water to drink and every 15 seconds a child dies from a preventable water related disease. So PUR teamed up with a host of celebrity activists (including Jessica Biel, Lupe Fiasco, Kenna) and educators to create Summit on the Summit, the climb up Mt. Kilimanjaro to raise action and awareness of the water crisis. This documentary follows their experience on the climb. Come watch and see if they make it to the top!”

I know this one is a bit old, but I don’t think it got as much pub as it should have. A few weeks back PUR teamed up with a couple of celebrities and educators to host the Summit on the Summit climb up Mt. Kilimanjaro. It is interesting to see these [familiar faces] engaging in such. Big ups to Lupe Fiasco and Jessica Biel. This was definitely worth the watch. In case you haven’t seen the full thing I’m sure you can find clips of it on the internet and other videos elsewhere.

He’s a brief trailer of actual footage from the climb.

I definitely think it is a great thing that they’re doing. It’s cool when famous individuals ["celebrities"] team up, pull together and get involved with a cause like this. Still, let’s keep pushing the bar even higher. Society has been slacking, as we all know… or might not know. I won’t lie- I am somewhat bitter towards the fact that people have had their eyes opened with regard to certain global issues and yet they carry on with the same, sloppy and careless lifestyles. The bar has been set so low, and people have really become selfish. Enough with my ranting though, go watch the video. Enjoy.

Rhymefest “FamiliarFaces”

Rhymefest

Recently, big brother Che Smith, aka Rhymefest. released the track “Familiar Faces.” In case you haven’t checked this out, I STRONGLY recommend it. Fest is a definitely a one of a kind leader and he continues to inspire many through his music. Though he had problems with the label he was on and only had about 50-60k to push the album which usually requires about 100k, he has continued to keep a positively strong attitude about the 5/18 release date.

This  song was definitely one that caught my attention though. Not just because I am big supporter of Rhymefest, but because when I check it out on FSD, I was again reminded of how much I can relate to a lot of what he says in his music. He has been one of very FEW artists to maintain my attention- that is, even out of the greats [legends] that chicago has brought us, I’ve always felt like homie is in his own category within that. Eeveryone else seems to have become jaded in that category. And still, I guarantee you that I can go to a new RF record and relate just as I did the first time I heard his music.

[lyrics to "familiar faces"]

“They say don’t put off tomorrow what you could finish today, [I say] the rest of your life is only seconds away. [I rate] success of a life by decisions we make. [I hate] the fact that we’re judged every step we take. [I caint] wait for the lord, revelation’s my fate. [I paint] pictures with words, fuchsia, teals and grays. [I shine] hot as the sun you can feel my rays. Naw.. wait, you can feel my rage. I’m burning inside, nobody can speak my language. We all want to be different, but we’re doing the same shit. Wear the same clothes, same chains, same scars. Got the same goals, want to be the same stars. Same heartbreak we carry the same scars…I carry the same scars…And when you’ve finally made it, its no real friends just smiling faces.”

“Does it start on our birthday? Half of us wasn’t planned in the first place. Other half of us was given everything they’ve got…there you have it..the have.. and the have nots. I was born on a black spot. My life’s a plane, and this song is the black box. Put it on- heat it…Hear the final five minutes of a genius, the world would never see it, never believe it. Its in our palms but we can’t seize it, within our reach but we don’t reach it, don’t tell me that I can’t be it. I haven’t won til I aint even. I ain’t leaving til I aint breathing. No apologies, no tears. No emotions, no fears. Look at my face you can’t even see the years, but carved in the tree are the words I was here..

“[No], no one can tell you what you ought to be. [My]… my silent thoughts are heard audibly. [It's]… It’s like people don’t have to talk to me. They body language speaks louder  just when they’re crossing me, brushing me, bumping me touching me I can feel they’re energy. Hatin’ me lovin’ me- cocaine and Hennessy. Mixing with egos, music, models and industry. Its hard to separate reality from fantasy. So does it matter if I’m hear or not? If no one’s around could you hear the shot? Would my father miss me?  You think a tear would drop? Or would the world stop spinning, and clock stop?..Think not..

-Rhymefest
